Being vegan and going out for food in London has never been so easy! The number of vegans in Britain has risen by 360% in 10 years. Which means there are a lot of people demanding ethical food, and thankfully, that demand is being met.
According to the Vegan Society, some 500,000+ people in the UK are now vegan, that’s almost 1% of the population. And with the plethora of foodie places catering for vegans, the world is quite literally your oyster (mushroom)!
Here at Votch we love food, as you may already know from our previous articles ‘Our Favourite Dairy-Free Chocolates’ and our partnership with vegan snack company Snact. Today we’re breaking down this post by offering you seven places to choose from for either breakfast, lunch or dinner. Let us know if you happen to go to any of these places and if you’d like more food spot recommendations. We’re always happy to shoot some food pictures with our Votch watches. Let’s go!
Breakfast
Based in trendy Shoreditch, this restaurant with very minimalistic vibes is fully vegan and most of the options are gluten-free. They have some delicious options for breakfast and lunch. We’ve tried the raw vegan pancakes, the chickpea scramble and their coffees… And we can confirm it’s worth a visit if you happen to be in that area. Plus the waiters are super friendly!
Another popular one which you may have heard of, this Australian café offers vegan options. We love their selection of colourful lattes and teas, as well as the açai bowl and avocado toast. We recommend you show up at 10am to avoid the queue due to its popularity! Make sure your phone is charged to snap that perfect Instagram pic as well!
Lunch
An absolute must-try! Located in the colourful alley at Neal’s Yard Remedies in Covent Garden, this is another beautiful little corner in London that many tourists don’t know about. Call it the vegan haven, if you wish, as there is also 26 Grains, a gluten-free and healthy restaurant and also a cruelty-free hairdresser around the corner! In terms of the food at Wild Food Café, everything is vegan, organic and seasonal. Founded many years ago, this restaurant has been leading the way in the London raw, plant-based scene and offers delicious and colourful dishes to your delectation. The menu changes every season, so that gives you an excuse to go at least 4 times a year!
Only open since September 2017, this 100% plant-based restaurant is raving extremely good reviews, and for good reason! Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, we love the modern aesthetics and the delicious food. The Wulf burger being the most popular item in the menu, the Green Coconut Curry and the Tex Mex Salad bowl are also super delicious options. You will often see cute doggies with their owners in there too - we might need to bring Rolo next time there as well!
Dinner
For the most fine-dining experience, Vanilla Black is the place to go. A high-class vegetarian and vegan restaurant, prepare yourself for the most refined plant-based cooking you’ll see in London! ‘Apologies in advance, no pasta bake or vegetable curry’ you’ll see on the menu. We recommend it for special occasions and it’s of course a great place for everyone and not just plant eaters!
Available either at their Camden Pamela restaurant or at the Shoreditch Dinerama, let yourself get carried away the next level of Mexican vegan food with their ‘Tofish Tacos’ and ‘Cheezy fries’! Definitely an indulgent treat but oh-so-worth it. They also offer vegan eggs benedict at their restaurant in Camden which we are still to try!
Finally, we can’t finish this article without mentioning our friends at Vurger Co for the best vegan burger in town. Look no further (ok, we might be a bit biased, but really!). After launching an extremely successful crowdfunding campaign and organising pop-ups across London, they now have their very own permanent restaurant next to Boxpark in Shoreditch. The classic Vurger with extra avocado and sweet potato fries are an absolute must! We are so proud to call them our friends as we launched at around the same time in 2016.
With the growth of plant-based restaurants across the UK, we are always keeping an eye on new openings and food innovators. With an impressive array of vegan restaurants here in London, standard food chains are also jumping into the growing movement by adding vegan-friendly options to their menus, such as Byron and Domino’s!
Have you ever been to any of these places? If not, which one are you most excited to try?
